Huntley Speaks Out
The District 158 School Board decided on Nov. 5 to follow the Illinois Department of Public Health guidelines and push basketball season for the Huntley High School Red Raiders back to the spring. The spring sports season could be held if there is improvement in the metrics indicating the severity of the COVID-19 pandemic for McHenry County. We asked five people for their reactions to the news.

Aiden Wieczorek, an HHS junior and guard on the basketball team, which went 31-0 as sophomores: “I personally don’t like the decision because I wanted to play in a few weeks, at the normal time. It kind of stinks because the season is a big part of the whole team. We were hoping to be good this year. It’s definitely tough, and we just have to hope for spring. But we would have liked to play in the winter, for sure.” |

Nathan Ary, an HHS junior and also a guard on the basetball team: “It was disappointing to hear it because we are preparing for it and we’re working to play at this time. Obviously, it’s a big disappointment, but there is some opportunity because we have a lot more time to get better. I worry that we might not have a season at all now, because it could just keep getting pushed back to the point where the school year is done. So, I was hoping we would play in the fall, but it is what it is.” | ![]() |

Ethan Phillips, an HHS junior who saw his lacrosse season pushed back to spring/summer: ““I feel super bad for them because they’ve been pretty good over the years. Their freshman team and their sophomore team both went undefeated both years. I know that talking with them, they’ve been working hard, so it sucks for them to have their season cut short, even if it happens at all. There’s still a chance they’ll play, but I feel pretty bad for them.” | ![]() |

Ashley Cavitt, Huntley: “I think it’s sad for the families and the players, but it could also be a bit of a blessing in disguise. If it gives them more time to get better, then maybe some of the kids’ seasons could be the best they’ve ever had.” | ![]() |

Victor Rodriguez, Huntley: “I think it’s a good thing during the pandemic right now, to avoid it until the spring, so whatever they’re going to do with it, I’m good with that” | ![]() |
