Sew Hop’d Brewery and Taproom hosts a pint for a pint blood drive
HUNTLEY – In cooperation with the Versiti Blood Center of Illinois, Sew Hop’d Brewery and Taproom will be hosting a blood drive on Wednesday, April 21. Sew Hop’d manager Katie Hofmann explained that blood supplies have dropped to concerning levels, with Versiti only having less than a one-day inventory on hand. Typically, a three-day inventory supply is what is needed, according to Hofmann.
She went further into detail regarding how in light of more people being vaccinated against COVID-19, attention from blood drives have shifted away.
“Yet meanwhile, with more activities picking up outside the home, hospitals are requiring more blood to treat patients. The convergence of the two is creating a very challenging situation—a shortage of much needed blood,” Hofmann said.
Hofmann stated that O negative and O positive blood types are especially needed seeing that it is a universal blood type that can be transfused to all patients including trauma victims, cancer patients and those undergoing surgery.
Individuals who successfully donate blood at the Sew Hop’d blood drive event, will receive a coupon for a beer from the brewery. They will also be hosting the Fat Tomato Inc. food truck on scene from 5 -8 p.m. for those that need to replenish some nutrients afterwards.
Versiti typically does not mind walk-ins for blood donations, though they do prefer participants to have an appointment scheduled.
“I know they accept walk-ins, but with COVID I think they prefer the appointments so they can keep things as spaced out as possible,” Hofmann said.
As of current, the earliest time slot available is at 4:50 p.m. with the latest one occurring at 7:20 p.m.
Versiti recommends individuals planning on donating to get a good night’s rest, eat a healthy meal and stay hydrated before during and after their scheduled appointment.
Those who have recently received their COVID-19 vaccine must wait two days after the day of the vaccination to donate blood or platelets, according to the Versiti website.
Residents interested in this event can schedule their appointment at: donate.illinois.versiti.org/…/drive…/5581853. The event will take place at one of Versiti’s mobile coach buses parked at the Sew Hop’d Brewery at One Union Special Plaza Suite 113.
