22nd Circuit Reduces Mask Restriction for Vaccinated Individuals
On May 27, 2021, the Illinois Supreme Court amended M.R. 30370 Illinois Courts Response to COVID-19 Emergency, which allows local courts to choose whether to allow vaccinated individuals to enter a courthouse without wearing a mask or face covering. Therefore, Chief Judge James S. Cowlin has entered an Administrative Order, which states in part,
“it is appropriate to modify the masking rules for the Michael J. Sullivan Judicial Center to allow persons who have been vaccinated against COVID-19 and are two weeks past their final vaccine injection to enter the Michael J. Sullivan Judicial Center, commencing June 1, 2021, and conduct business without a mask or face covering while maintaining six (6) feet of social distancing.”
Individuals, including judges, court staff, parties, attorneys, jurors, and witnesses, should not enter the Michael J. Sullivan Judicial Center, if they
- Have new flu-like symptoms including fever, cough, or shortness of breath (excluding such symptoms caused by chronic conditions).
- Currently have been directed to quarantine or isolate at home by any medical provider or public health official; or
- Reside or have regular close contact with a person currently subject to a quarantine or isolation direction issued by a medical provider or public health official and are not themselves fully vaccinated.
Through the collaborative efforts of many people, departments, and agencies, the 22nd Judicial Circuit continues to provide access to justice, while ensuring healthy and safe practices, during this time of crisis. When the Illinois Supreme Court provides additional direction, the 22nd Judicial Circuit will modify practices as appropriate.
