How one “talon-ted” young author masters the art of dragons
MCHENRY COUNTY – When Ella Selvaggio isn’t working on publishing her next big story idea, she enjoys attending cheer practice, horseback riding or playing soccer. All activities she balances while maneuvering the hustle and bustle of school. She attends Marlowe Middle School in Lake in the Hills.
Though what’s truly inspiring about this young author’s journey in already having published two books despite her busy schedule, is the fact that she is only 11 years old.
Sal Selvaggio, Ella’s father, helps with the editing process and is always impressed at the extent of her creativity.
“We are very proud of her. Her little imagination amazes us every day. They’ll be times we’re editing the book and I’ll say, ‘This doesn’t make much sense because of what you said earlier.’ Then she says, ‘Well what if this happens and this happens.’ She keeps rattling off ideas that you would never think of,” Sal said. “It’s tough for an editor to write a quality book because they don’t have the ideas and talent that these writers have and I can see it come out of her. It’s pretty impressive.”
Ella explained that it typically takes around nine months to complete a book as she writes whenever she has free time.
“First, I write a rough draft of the book and then my dad, he picks up little things that don’t make sense or could be better. Then, we sit down side by side and fix those things until it’s good and cleaned and polished and all that stuff. Then we read it over just to make sure it’s good. Then we send it out to our other editor who edits like the grammar and other stuff like the punctuation,” she said.
Being an author is no easy feat, according to Ella, who stated that she was most surprised at how difficult it can be to continuously have to go through the editing process before a book is ready for publication.
However, it is well worth the effort for Ella as she often hears from admirers of her fantasy series.
“Whether it’s an email, a letter or just a simple review on the book, usually they say they’re really excited for the next book and they liked the books that are currently out or that they can’t wait for the book to get [to them],” Ella said.
Ella’s first book, “Legends of Morana: The Dark Threat Rises” was published in June 2020, while she was still 10 years old.
The first book and its sequel, “Legends of Morana: Drax’s Return” are currently available for purchase on Amazon. Both books feature a fantasy world full of dragons and other mythical creatures embarking on various adventures, making it a great series to keep young readers entertained.
For those aspiring in wanting to become a writer, Ella shared a piece of advice.
“I say just to try to find your taste. Like read different genres in books and try to find which genre you like. Then you can try writing in that style and if it goes well, you can just keep on with your story, but if it doesn’t go well, then you can try a different genre,” she said.
Ella isn’t sure if she will pursue writing as a career, but ensures she has plenty more ideas for future books.
As for what brings her the most joy out of being an author, Ella explained, “There’s this one author. Her name is Tui T. Sutherland and I’m in love with her books, but the thing is that she doesn’t even know I’m alive. So, I think it’s cool that I don’t even know that there are kids alive that are enjoying my books.”
To find out more about Ella and her books, individuals can visit ellaselvaggio.com or can simply search the two books on Amazon.
Sal stated on Facebook that he would be more than happy to assist those who are struggling financially, obtain a copy of Ella’s books at no cost, as Ella gets joy out of people enjoying her writing.
