President Biden’s arrival destination in Crystal Lake reported to be at MCC
MCHENRY COUNTY – Although McHenry County College (MCC) has not formally made an announcement regarding President Joe Biden’s arrival scheduled for Wednesday, July 7, the Chicago Sun-Times reported being told by sources that unless plans change, President Biden is to appear at MCC in Crystal Lake.
The news was seemingly confirmed by the Democratic Party of McHenry County via their Twitter page, in which they stated that “President Biden will be visiting McHenry County College this Wednesday (July 7) to highlight some of the benefits of the American Families Plan.”
Matt Hill, White House senior associate communications director, first made the announcement of Biden’s Crystal Lake visit, via his Twitter page on July 3. Though he did not specify a specific time of when Biden is set to arrive.
Reports indicate that McHenry County was the only collar county to not vote in favor of Biden, with official results demonstrating that 50.2% of McHenry County votes went to former President Donald Trump during the April 2020 presidential election.
Despite McHenry County’s Republican vote majority, Crystal Lake is represented in the U.S. House of Representatives for Illinois’ 14th Congressional District, by Democrat Rep. Lauren Underwood, who is expected to be at MCC in support of Biden.
Democrat Rep. Sean Casten, from the 6th District-a vast district that includes large parts of DuPage and Kane counties and also extends north to include southwest Lake and southeast McHenry counties-will also be in attendance.
According to the White House, the American Families Plan focuses on education efforts as well as providing direct support to children and families.
“The American Families Plan includes $1.8 trillion in investments and tax credits for American families and children over ten years. It consists of about $1 trillion in investments and $800 billion in tax cuts for American families and workers,” the White House reports.
Additionally, Biden is calling for $200 billion for free universal pre-school for all three-and four-year-olds, as well as $109 billion for two years of free community college.
Biden has already made a stop in Traverse City, Michigan in an effort to highlight the infrastructure plan he negotiated with a group of senators. Last week, he toured a La Crosse, Wisconsin transit facility, remarking on an infrastructure deal during his visit.
Underwood told WGN 9 that Biden’s Crystal Lake visit would be special.
“We have a lot to celebrate: our freedom, our liberty, becoming part of a perfect union, and in Crystal Lake, we’re going to be welcoming the president,” she told the news outlet on July 4.
While it seemed that Crystal Lake representatives were surprised by the news of Biden’s arrival, Kristina Zahorik, the Executive Board chair for the Democratic Party of McHenry County, was excited to hear about the president’s arrival.
“We are excited that the President is highlighting our great Community College and thank him and our Illinois Democratic Delegation for supporting building back better with investments in the American Rescue Plan, the American Infrastructure Plan, and the American Family Plan,” Zahorik said via email. “He is fulfilling his promise of being the President for us all, regardless of partisan affiliation.”
She mentioned that the event is not political in nature, however, no further details of Biden’s Crystal Lake visit have been made evident as far as what else he plans to discuss or whether the event will allow public participation. This will be Biden’s first visit to Illinois.
