McHenry County Named in Top 10% of Healthy Counties by U.S. News & World Report

WOODSTOCK, Ill. – McHenry County ranked in the top 10% in the fourth annual Healthiest Communities rankings by U.S. News & World Report.

The media company partnered with the Aetna Foundation, a philanthropic affiliate of CVS Health, to survey more than 3,000 communities nationwide. McHenry County came in at 233 rd most healthy, with a median score of 70 percent; the average for Illinois counties was 52 percent, and 48 percent nationally.

“It’s no secret that McHenry County is one of the best places in America to live, work, raise a family or start a business,” County Board Chairman Mike Buehler, R-Crystal Lake, said. “But it’s always nice to see national recognition for what we’ve built here, working together, and this recognition is yet another feather in our cap.”

The rankings were calculated by 84 individual metrics spread across 10 categories: Population health, equity, education, economy, housing, food and nutrition, environment, public safety, community vitality, and infrastructure.

McHenry County’s highest scores were for its economy, at 80 percent, and public safety, which was ranked at 75 percent.

The survey results also are a testament to McHenry County’s desire to improve health, said Lori Parrish, chairwoman of the County Board Public Health and Community Services Committee. Since 2006, the McHenry County Department of Health has worked with local organizations to conduct a Healthy Community Study, a comprehensive strategic health plan to improve health and well-being. “Not everyone realizes how many factors impact a community’s overall health. From food and nutrition, to housing, to infrastructure and more, each factor plays a critical role in the health of our community,” Parrish, R-Crystal Lake, said. “Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, I’m proud that the McHenry County Department of Health and its partner organizations continued work on the Healthy Community Study, and I think its comprehensive view of health factors played a role in this welcome recognition.”
