Randall Road Corridor Improvement project’s completion to be celebrated at a ribbon-cutting ceremony
MCHENRY COUNTY – On Wednesday, Sep. 15, McHenry County Board Chairman Michael Buehler and elected officials will be celebrating the completion of the Randall Road Corridor Improvement project with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10 a.m.
According to the Randall Road information website, all lanes on Randall Road were officially opened for travel on Sep. 1 except for some miscellaneous work and landscaping being completed over a few weeks.
The website also states that the McHenry County Division of Transportation “identified the Randall Road Improvements as one of the key projects needed to relieve congestion in this heavily traveled north/south corridor of the County.”
The project took place over three phases with “Phase I: Planning” being completed in 2013.
“Phase II: Design” began in 2014 and according to the website, “Provided details needed to move forward and follow final construction drawings to be prepared.”
“Phase III: Construction” began around the late summer of 2018. The project included the widening of Randall Road “to provide three through lanes in each direction with up to four for the portion between Bunker Hill/Huntington Drive just up to Polaris Drive/Acorn Lane.”
The project website also explained that dual left-turn lanes and separate right-turn lanes were provided at all signalized intersections. Additionally, the cross streets at the signalized intersection were widened to “allow vehicles to enter Randall Road more efficiently.”
A pedestrian underpass was another addition that was constructed just between Harnish Drive and Bunker Hill/Huntington Drive.
Finally, the project included an eight-foot-wide multi-use path along the east side of Randall Road and the south side of Algonquin Road, a five-foot-wide sidewalk along the west side of Randall Road and the north side of Algonquin Road, and new signals were added to indicate a right turn only onto Randall Road from the side street at the AMC theater/Costco as well as a right turn only onto Randall Road from the Randall and Stonegate Road intersection.
Construction was ongoing until its completion this year.
The Randall Road project website states that 58% of the costs for the improvements were secured through Federal Funds with county funding accounting for the remaining 42% of costs.
