Kane County Sheriff’s Office arrests driver responsible for a serious hit and run accident
ELGIN – The Kane County Sheriff’s Office reported on Sep. 18 that 47-year-old Ruben Campuzano, of the 500 block of Harrison Street in Elgin, was taken into custody after detectives pursued a lead on Sep. 16 from an independent witness.
Campuzano was responsible for a Sep. 13 hit and run accident which resulted in serious injuries for 72-year-old St. Charles resident Ron Siwula.
Siwula was traveling north on Route 25 on his 2020 Harley Davidson three-wheeled motorcycle when he proceeded to stop at a red light at the intersection of Gilbert Street in unincorporated St. Charles.
Surveillance video from a nearby business captured Campuzano’s vehicle striking Siwula from behind at a high rate of speed and fleeing from the scene.
Sheriff’s detectives interviewed Campuzano on Sep. 17 where he admitted to striking the motorcycle and not stopping because he did not have a valid driver’s license.
Campuzano was charged with “Failure to Report an Injury Accident, a class 2 felony; Aggravated Reckless Driving, a class 4 felony; and Driving While License Suspended—a second offense, a class 4 felony,” according to Kane County Sheriff Ron Hain.
Siwula’s family states they are indebted to the Kane County Sheriff’s Office and the people who rushed to Siwula’s aid.
Donna LaMantia, one of Siwula’s family members, created a GoFundMe account for Siwula and his wife.
“Ron has sustained life-threatening injuries and of course, his motorcycle is totaled. Any donations will be used for living expenses and medical bills. Please keep them in your prayers,” LaMantia wrote on the GoFundMe page.
LaMantia posted an update on Sep. 19 stating that the family was able to have a quick visit with Siwula, however, she noted that he has a long road to recovery ahead of him.
So far, Siwula’s GoFundMe account has raised over $6,000 of its $25,000 goal.
Hain credits his Investigations Division on staying focused to find the offender who “disregarded the value of life in this egregious incident.”
Campuzano’s next court date is scheduled for Sep. 29 in Courtroom 305 of the Kane County Judicial Center. His bail is set to $500,000.
