Village of Lake in the Hills hosts first-ever Girls in Aviation Day
LAKE IN THE HILLS – Lake in the Hills officials announced on Sep. 9 that the village will be hosting its first-ever Girls in Aviation Day event in partnership with Women in Aviation International (WAI).
The free event will take place on Sep. 25 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Lake in the Hills 3CK Airport, located at 8397 Pyott Road.
While registration for the event has since been closed, attendees who were able to sign up will be treated to a lunch as well as learn topics on aircraft maintenance, careers in aviation, get to experience an aerodynamics module, and other interactive opportunities.
The event is meant to target girls and young women between the ages of 11 to 21 to inspire them into learning more about possible career opportunities in fields like engineering, aircraft maintenance, air traffic control, and more.
“We are excited to bring such a positive and educational STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) experience to girls and young women in our area,” said Tom Migatz, director of Public Works. “Our team is eager to welcome speakers and educators to the airport and facilitate an event meant to inspire future aviation professionals.”
The rotating 40-minute sessions will also allow participants to engage with speakers involved in various aviation-related fields.
“The aviation professionals and hobbyists joining our event are excited to share their stories and encourage girls and young women to explore opportunities in aviation that they may not have considered before,” said Airport Manager Michael Peranich. “We are honored to host this exciting educational event at the Lake in the Hills 3CK Airport.”
Chicago’s Leading Edge Chapter of WAI will also be on-site to talk to attendees about scholarships and other opportunities available to those interested.
“We provide education, mentoring, and scholarship opportunities for women who are striving for challenging and fulfilling careers in the aviation and aerospace industries,” said Colleen La Plata of Chicago’s Leading Edge Chapter in a Sep. 9 press release. “We are excited to partner with the Village and embrace the opportunity to encourage and inspire girls and young women in this community.”
The WAI is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the encouragement and advancement of women in all aviation career fields and interests.
While the Lake in the Hills event was limited to 100 guests, individuals may still find other educational and career resources through the WAI website at wai.org.
Currently, Chicago’s Leading Edge Chapter of WAI is looking to give out three different scholarships for women interested in the field of aviation.
The scholarship deadline is Oct. 12. For more information on how to apply for the scholarships or to learn more about Chicago’s Leading Edge Chapter of WAI visit chicagosleadingedge.org.
