Arrest made for the shooting of a juvenile in Elgin
ELGIN – On Oct. 3, the Elgin Police Department announced that at approximately 3 a.m., several calls were received for the sounds of shots fired in the 200 block of Dupage Street in the vicinity of East Chicago and North Geneva Streets.
Upon arrival to the scene, officers discovered a juvenile male victim that had been struck by gunfire four times. The victim was subsequently transported to an area hospital with serious injuries.
The Elgin Police Department released an update on Oct. 4 stating that a 16-year-old male juvenile was taken into custody for the Oct. 3 shooting.
According to an Oct. 4 press release, Kane County State’s Attorney Jamie Mosser charged the juvenile with attempted murder, a Class X felony; aggravated battery with a firearm, a Class X felony, and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, a Class 4 felony.
The accused offender will be tried in adult court due to the serious nature of his charges. Because the offender is still a juvenile, however, the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office has chosen to not reveal the offender’s identity.
Under Public Act 99-258 that was enacted on Jan. 1, 2016, offenders who are at least 16-years-old are excluded from the juvenile court’s jurisdiction only if they are charged with first-degree murder, aggravated criminal sexual assault, or aggravated battery with a firearm, according to the Illinois State Bar Association.
Despite the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office not revealing the identity of the juvenile suspect, the Daily Herald reported that the Kane County circuit court clerk’s records website lists the offender of the Oct. 3 shooting as Julian A. Zamudio.
Kane County circuit court records indicate that Zamudio has only been charged with one other prior offense in March 2020 for possession of cannabis.
Zamudio appeared in Kane County bond court on Oct. 4 where Kane County Judge Julia Yetter set bail at $500,000, with 10% ($50,000) to apply for bond.
Judge Yetter set Zamudio’s next court appearance for 9 a.m. on Oct. 15 in Courtroom 305 at the Kane County Judicial Center.
The juvenile victim who was hit by the gunfire remains hospitalized.
The Elgin Police Department is still investigating the incident and asks anyone with information to contact them at 847-289-2600.
