Huntley’s Hampton Inn given a six-month extension to open for business; supply-chain issues to blame
HUNTLEY – Back in May, Huntley’s Deputy Village Manager Lisa Armour had told My Huntley News that Huntley’s new four-story, 100-room Hampton Inn was on track to completing construction for an anticipated opening date of Dec. 31 under a Business Development Agreement (BDA) signed by both the village and the developer Woodstock Hotel, Inc.
However, the Hampton Inn, which will be located at 13000 Route 47 and will occupy 3.7 acres of Lot 2 of the Huntley Crossings corporate park, has come forward to ask the village for a six-month extension on the previously agreed upon opening date.
“Staff has received a letter from the owner requesting the six-month extension of time to complete construction and open the hotel for occupancy. The stated reasons include subcontractor and equipment provider supply chain issues,” Armour told trustees on Nov. 18. “So again, per the terms of the Business Development Agreement, the board may extend the completion date of December 31, 2021, for a six-month period which would be June 30 of 2022.”
Trustee Ronda Goldman sympathized with Harry Patel, the operator of Woodstock Hotel, Inc., stating that she didn’t see a problem with approving a six-month extension.
“We know about supply chain issues. It’s affected everybody. We know that there’s lack of help. It’s affected everybody and I don’t see any reason why we can’t go along with that delay because it says up to six months [in the BDA], and let’s pray and hope that you’re open in spring, at least by Easter,” said Goldman.
Trustees JR Westberg and Niko Kanakaris agreed with Goldman, while Trustee Mary Holzkopf shared that she had some concerns that Patel would keep pushing for more extensions to the project.
Trustees Harry Leopold and Curt Kittle echoed Holzkopf’s concerns telling Patel that the board would like to see more transparency in terms of how the hotel project is progressing to ensure to them that the hotel will open by June 2022 at the latest.
Additionally, Huntley Mayor Tim Hoeft told Patel his thoughts on changes he would like to see moving forward.
“One thing I’d probably like to see would be if you could give us monthly updates of where you’re at going forward and then like I said, I see six months being it, and if you got to come back to us after six months, I think then we’ve got to look at the incentive package at that point of what we can or can’t do,” said Hoeft referring to an ordinance the village approved on July 23, 2020, that would grant Woodstock Hotel, Inc. various tax incentives upon opening for operation.
Despite some concerns from trustees, the board unanimously voted to approve of a six-month extension for the completion and opening of Huntley’s Hampton Inn.
Patel told trustees that he anticipates the hotel to open well before June of next year, but was happy to have at least six months as an added safety net in case of any further setbacks.
