Port Barrington man shot in a domestic violence incident identified; female victim recovering after surgery
PORT BARRINGTON – On Jan. 11, McHenry County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a call for domestic violence at approximately 1:22 a.m. in the 200 block of Manchester Lane in Port Barrington.
Upon their arrival, the suspect opened fire on the deputies and an adult female on the scene. Deputies returned fire, striking the suspect, according to a statement from the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office. The suspect was pronounced dead on the scene.
Following the incident, McHenry County Coroner Michael Rein identified the deceased suspect as Nicholas D. Sebastian, 43, of Port Barrington.
Sebastian’s wife—who was named as the female victim in a GoFundMe fundraiser that was set up for her and her family—was transported to Advocate Condell Hospital to treat her non-life-threatening injuries.
“Our beloved Antoinette was involved in a tragic incident fatally injuring her late husband in which she was shot and injured. She has had one surgery and will be undergoing rehabilitation and physical therapy for at least four months,” said Sara Crespo, the organizer of the family’s GoFundMe fundraiser. “Our family is asking for prayers and donations to help this mother restart a life for her and the boys, alone, financially. The family thanks you for your sincere support and donations during this difficult time as we keep her and the boys in our prayers.”
Rein stated that Sebastian died as a result of multiple gunshot wounds. Toxicology results are still pending.
None of the responding deputies were injured during the incident, which is being investigated by the Major Investigation Assistance Team (MIAT).
“Deputies involved have 1 year and 5.5 years of service at McHenry County Sheriff’s Office. In accordance with department policy, both deputies have been placed on paid administrative leave, pending the outcome of the investigation by an external entity,” stated the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office.

“After a tragedy like this, the last thing a mother should worry about is the financial future of her small children. Thank you for helping in any way you can,” wrote Crespo on the GoFundMe page.
