Man suspected of robbing a gas station arrested by Cary Police
CARY – Cary Police Deputy Chief Scott Naydenoff stated that on Jan. 25, officers were dispatched to a Marathon Gas Station located at 8 E. Main Street (intersection of First Street and U.S. Route 14 in Cary) at approximately 10:05 p.m. for a report of an armed robbery that had just occurred.
“The clerk, who was the victim of the robbery, reported a male subject entered the business, displayed the grip of a pistol in the waistband of his pants, and demanded money,” said Naydenoff. “The offender took USC and a bottle of soda.”
Following the robbery, the offender—who was identified as 33-year-old Bryan J. Leider of Round Lake Park—proceeded to leave the business on foot.
Leider subsequently got into a white SUV and drove a short distance before crashing his vehicle into a traffic signal and a sign belonging to a private business at the intersection of First Street and Route 14.
Naydenoff stated that Leider was last seen fleeing on foot, southbound across Route 14.
The Cary Police Department utilized the assistance of the Carpentersville Police Department’s K9 Unit in an attempt to locate Leider but were unsuccessful.
On the morning of Jan. 26, patrol officers were dispatched to what was believed to be an unrelated incident.
“In the course of investigating the incident, officers recognized similarities in the description of a subject involved in the incident and the offender from the armed robbery,” said Naydenoff. “Further investigation revealed evidence connecting the subject to the armed robbery.”
Through additional investigation, Leider was able to be linked to the original incident and charged with one count of Aggravated Robbery, a Class 1 felony.
Leider was processed and transported to the McHenry County Adult Correctional Facility in Woodstock to await a bond hearing, which took place on Thursday, Jan. 27.
Leider’s bond was set at $8,000 and he is currently still confined at the McHenry County jail while awaiting his next court date for his additional charges of Aggravated Assault with the use of a deadly weapon/rifle; a Class A felony; Retail Theft, a Class A felony; and Disorderly Conduct, a Class C felony.
