
Tribute, shutout win presented by HHS soccer
HUNTLEY – Huntley girls soccer team members all donned purple t-shirts all with the name “Evitts” and a number 10 on the back on April 5 at Marian Central.
“We started to wear them last season,” HHS junior Grace Helzer said, referring to the late Hannah Evitts. “We all knew her or played soccer with her.”
Red Raider coach Mat Lewandowski said Evitts played through the ranks of the Huntley girls youth soccer program.
“We appreciate Marian Central mentioning Hannah in the pre-game prayer,” the coach said, “It was very generous.”
The day was complete when the Red Raiders notched their second win of the season, 4-0 over the Hurricanes, for Monday for a 2-1-1 record. The spring conditions were summer-like weather for early practices, then a downturn even with a half plus of a snowstorm filled for one battle.
“We came out in the second half and were focused. We worked on rebound shots in practice,” Grace Helzer said. “We’re looking forward to the conference season.”
Helzer, a forward, got the scoring started three minutes into the second half with an assist from Hanna Helzer. The other tallies all took place in the final 10 minutes, as sophomore forward Ava Trudeau scored off a play from Alexandera Szydowski; freshman Madison Cummings had one goal and one assist; Hanna Helzer had one goal and Riley Chadwick the other assist. Senor Nova Rothlisberger notched the win in goal.
“We need to work on finishing shots but it all worked out,” Lewandowski said.
The match was played in much improved conditions than a 5-0 snowstorm stopped loss to Rockford Boylan April 2.
Fifth-year head coach Lewandowski’s team is consists of 11 seniors, five juniors, four sophomores and one freshman who hope to make a statement in Fox Valley Conference matches.
The Red Raiders earned a 6-0 shutout of Elgin Larkin March 31, Notching goals were sophomore Gabriella Farraj; Trudeau; junior Morgan McCaughnl senior Kaitlyn Guyer; seniors Annalisa Stevens and Ysabella DeMonica.
“I was pleased with the way we fought,” Lewandowski said of the Larkin match.
