Elgin man identified as sole occupant of a fatal car crash in Kane County
KANE COUNTY — On Saturday, April 16, at 6 a.m., Kane County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a report of a car accident that occurred on Plank Road in the area west of 42W107 Plank Road, in unincorporated Plato Township.
Upon their arrival at the scene, sheriff’s deputies discovered a deceased male, who was the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle. The victim was later identified as Stephen V. Holguin, 26, of Elgin.
According to the Kane County Sheriff’s Office, the initial investigation of the incident indicated that Holguin was driving his 2008 Volvo S80 east on Plank Road near Marshall Road on the morning of April 16.
For reasons unknown to investigators, Holguin’s vehicle left the south side of the roadway and struck the embankment.
The Volvo then proceeded to roll over, which resulted in Holguin being ejected from the vehicle.
Authorities pronounced Holguin deceased at the scene.
As a result of the accident, Plank Road from Bahr Road to Marshall Road was shut down until 10 a.m. for the investigation.
It is not yet known if drugs or alcohol played a role in this crash, however, the incident continues to be investigated by sheriff’s detectives and members of the Kane County Drone Team.
No citations have been issued regarding this car accident.
Kane County court records indicate that Holguin’s only prior run-in with the law was in 2019 when he was charged with five criminal misdemeanors relating to domestic battery, criminal damage to property, interfering with reporting domestic violence, resisting or obstructing a police officer, and assault.
After being found guilty of some of the charges against him, Holguin was ordered to serve time in jail, attend domestic violence counseling, and pay over $1,000 in court fees and fines.
Kane County Sheriff’s deputies were assisted at the scene by the Pingree Grove Fire Protection District and the Kane County Office of Emergency Management.
