HHS earns bids to state meet, team sectional crown
HUNTLEY – Huntley’s girls track-and-field Class 3A IHSA State Sectional Meet started and finished well for the host Red Raiders on May 11. Both field and running events will feature the red and black HHS members at the IHSA State Girls Track-and-Field meet, May 20 and 21 at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.
The Red Raiders beat back the entire field for the sectional trophy win on a picture-perfect night. HHS finished with 130 team points, easily beating runner-up Prairie Ridge’s 78.5.
“It’s all a build up to the sectional and next week. Everyone we pegged to qualify for state did and we had a few surprises,” HHS coach Jason Monson said.
IHSA State Meet qualifiers were the first two finishers and those who met standards.
Junior Alex Johnson, the defending state champion in the long jump, qualified for a repeat at EIU with a win at 18-4.5. This comes after she set a new Fox Valley Conference record with a leap of 20-feet just 48 hours earlier. “Her 20-feet at conference was a big accomplishment,” Monson said. “At sectional, we monitored hers and Dominique’s jumps today so they did not have to use all six.”
Alex Johnson won the triple jump with a 41-0.5 effort and was part of the 4×100-meter relay team of Vicky Evitomov, Jessie Ozauto, Aninagyei-Bonsu which ran a 47.94 time to win.
The 4×100 meter relay of Melissa Aninagvei-Bonsu, Alex Johnson, Vicky Emitov and Jessie Ozzuto, provided the first track title of the night with in the 4×400 meter relay edged Jacobs for the 4×400-,meter crown to conclude the meet.
“We’ve been working for this since December and January,” Anineqvei-Bonsu said.
The Burak sisters, Breanna and Brittney, had strong nights in the 3,200 and 1,600-meter runs,
“I definitely wanted a good time to go to the state meet in good position,” Breanna Burak said. “I’ve been running since middle school, putting in the off-season work. I would like to run both cross country and track in college.”
Brittney Burak took the second slot to state in the1,600 and edged a Prairie Ridge runner at the finish.
Dominique Johnson qualified with a second in the triple jump; Alex Johnson and Aninagyei-Bonsu were second and third in the 100-meter run.
Gabby Whitfield and Anna Panzloff moved on to state with second-place efforts in the discus and pole vault.
“This is my first year in track, but I’ve been super-impressed. It seems there is something special in every event,” Panzloff said. She works on her pole vault skills at an off-season pole vault event club.
