HHS boys lacrosse conquers FVC; regional next
HUNTLEY – Huntley Boys lacrosse coach Dominic knew of the group’s talents early on.
“I scheduled the boys in some tournaments in the Midwest,” he said. “If this group from one town could do well against that competition, we knew we would be just fine. Then they took it a step farther and played club ball.”
Benefits of having the talented players as middle schoolers work together can be seen as the FVC champs head into the regional play. One goal for Huntley’s boys lacrosse squad was in the books when the Red Raiders secured Fox Valley Conference title May 16, keeping momentum going for an easy 22-0 shutout of Dundee-Crown. HHS chalked up a perfect 8-0 FVC mark, and was 15-4 to close the regular season.
An all-senior starting lineup was announced on Senior Day as the Red Raiders took on Schaumburg and prevailed on a hot Saturday afternoon, 12-3 The win came after an intense battle with Hampshire for the FVC lead which they won, 14-8.
Saccomanno was pleased with the way the regular season is wrapping up.
Brothers Jacob and Dylan Gehl were part of the early group and remember well when their interest in lacrosse got going in earnest.
“I have been involved in lacrosse for eight years and started in youth lacrosse in a summer league,” Jacob said.
The brothers will both play lacrosse in college next season at Carroll College.
The Red Raiders seniors each have played seven to 10 years of lacrosse, some starting with a group of neighborhood friends.
They were still buzzing about the 14-8 comeback win over Hampshire May 12 from an 8-3 deficit.
“We carried over the momentum from the Hampshire match and really brought energy as a group. The key against Hampshire was we cleaned it up in the second half. We had that match marked on our calendar all year,” senior Andrew Toman said, who is headed to Milwaukee School of Engineering to play lacrosse.
Seniors have been playing the sport for seven to 10 years, some starting from the same Huntley neighborhood. Also planning to play in college is Jeremy Hollow for Mukedon, Michigan and Ethan Phillips will play lacrosse for Carroll College.
