Red Raiders shoot for state tennis spots
HUNTLEY – Huntley’s boys tennis team readied for Class 2A sectional play at the Rockford Auburn sectional May 20 and 21, seeking bids to the IHSA Class 2A State Tournament. The IHSA State Boys Tennis Tournament is May 26-28 at Hersey High School n Arlington Heights.
“Our one doubles team of Ben Hein and Matt Grubbs are the 1 seed and should qualify,” HHS coach Barry Wells said. “They have had an excellent year.”
Wells gave an update on other qualifying possibilities.
“At No 2 doubles Varun Parat and Jack Coleman will have to play Hampshire and then most likely Hononegah if they beat Hampshire.” Wekks said, Hononegah is a good team but I think we can qualify if we play well. 1 singles Aryaan Khalil is seeded 4th and will have a good chance of qualifying. He will most likely have to beat the Auburn 2 singles player to qualify. Second singles Jonathon Stec is seeded 6th and will have to play the Hononegah 1 singles player to qualify. Auburn is probably our biggest competition to win the sectional. We have good draws and are playing well, we just have to get the job done.”
HHS competed at the Jacobs Quad to close the regular season. They lost to St. Charles North 3-1 and tied Prospect 2-2. Aryaan Khalil was 2-0 at No. 1 singles.
