Johnson sisters save best for last at state: Alex wins long, triple jump; Dominique nets 2nd
HUNTLEY – Off-season workouts are repeated frequently on summer days at Huntley’s Marlowe Middle School and those efforts set the framework for the Red Raiders’ two event state champion, Alex Johnson, who won both the long jump and triple jump state championships at the IHSA Girls Class 3A Track-and-Field Meet May 21.
“Our mom and dad (Alvin and Yolanda) work out with us five days a week at the middle school,” Huntley High School junior Alex Johnson said.
“They stress the importance of dedication and discipline,” Dominique Johnson said.
Alex Johnson defended her long jump championship with an effort of 6.0 meters. She won the triple jump championship in 12.33 meters, edging her younger sister Dominique Johnson’s 12.77 meters at the state meet.

There is always supportive teammates to rely on. “Just the togetherness of the team that pushes you to do better,” Alex Johnson said.
“Since eighth grade she has been putting in the extra time and effort reviewing film,” HHS head coach Jason Monson said of Alex Johnson. “I have talked to a lot of coaches about her and as talented as she is, she is a greater teammate.”
Alex Johnson had set a Fox Valley Conference long jump record and a school record with a 20-feet, one-quarter inch effort and won the sectional titles in the triple jump at 41-4.5 and the long jump in 19 6.5 while Dominique Johnson was second in the triple jump.

Alvin and Yolanda Johnson were watching with thousands at Eastern Illinois University’s O’Brien Stadium at the finals.
“I think I was more nervous last year,” Alvin Johnson said. “I almost had a heart attack. This year I was much calmer,” Alvin Johnson, who helps coach both daughters, said.
Sports have always been a big part of the family’s lives as Alvin said .Alex and Dominique have been running with mom and dad for years. “Yolanda and myself are both 50 and we work out all the time,” he said. “I played football at Louisville University and Yolanda played soccer at De Paul University.”
Alvin said Dominique Johnson is more of the triple jump specialist than Alex. Both follow the top national jumpers in college and the Olympics.
“I started it last year,” freshman Dominique Johnson said of the triple jump. “The first phase is the most important.”
