On to Jacobs: HHS 9 captures regional
HUNTLEY – The Huntley’s baseball squad reached a milestone win total of 30, as everything was clicking in domination of two Rockford teams at the Class 4A De Kalb Regional.
The Red Raiders, 30-4, breezed by Rockford Jefferson, 20-0, May 26 and then pounded Rockford Harlem, 18-1, May 28 for the regional championship. They face rival and neighbor Jacobs in Algonquin at 4:30 p.m. June 2.
“We split against them, so it will probably be a low-scoring game,” HHS coach Andy Jakubowski said. The kids know each other from summer ball, too, so whoever executes the best will win.”
The Golden Eagles topped the Red Raiders 5-1 April 23 then HHS won 10-0 two days later. FVC power McHenry also moved on to Jacobs, but this Saturday was about Huntley advancing with a regional championship.
“I’m so proud of the guys on the team,” senior captain Brandon Hanley said. “We’re hitting well and have a lot of confidence. Thirty wins is a testament to the work we’ve put in.”
“The first inning was the best we have executed a game plan all year,” Jakubowski said of the Harlem game. “We saw film on their pitcher and knew he was a little erratic.”
Meanwhile, the Huntley pitchers continued their dominance. The coach added starter Adam Guazzo turned in another solid effort. Guazzo stayed perfect with a 9-0 record, It was the ninth win of the season for Guazzo, who will play at Valparaiso University next season. Malachi Paplanus worked the final two innings in relief, and each struck out four.
The Red Raiders used seven doubles and two home runs to carve out the offense against Harlem. Brayden Bakes and Kyle Alther provided the dingers on a windy day at DeKalb.
The Huntley pitchers combined for a four-member no-hitter – Andrew Ressler, Derek Huber, Peyton Barr and Vinny Costantino against Jefferson in a 20-0 win in the regional semifinal. AJ Putty and Chase Jetel led the offense with three RBIs each.
HHS closed the regular season with an 11-3 win over top ranked St. Viator. “They are the No. 1 team in the state and it was a good tune-up for the post-season,” Jakubowski said.
