
Huntley dominates All-FVC softball selections
HUNTLEY – The Huntley Red Raiders softball team had seven members make the All-Fox Valley Conference team for 2022 as selected by league head coaches. HHS was a perfect 18-0 as repeat league champions.
The players honored were: senior outfielder Zoe Doherty; senior pitcher Jori Heard; junior outfielder Clara Hudgens; senior shortstop Reese Hunkins; junior outfielder Katie Mitchell; junior third baseman Madison Smith and sophomore first baseman Meg Ryan.
Heard was among the national leaders in strikeouts as she ended in sixth place with 416, according to MaxPreps. She finished with a 0.67 ERA and a 26-7 record. She was just three out of the next spot.
At the plate, Heard had a 0.443 batting average on 54 hits and hit 23 doubles. Mitchell had a 0.402 average on 43 hits while Hunkins 0.385 with 45 hits.
Hunkins led with 38 RBIs while Heard and Smith tallied 32 each.
Heard was the slugging percentage leader at 0.713 while Doherty concluded with 0.546 and Smith 0.535.
Mitchell led the team in stolen bases with 53 while Doherty swiped 18 and Hudgens 12.
Mitchell also paced the squad in runs scored with 44, followed by Hunkins’ 37 and Hudgens’ 35.
Season highlights
The Red Raiders finished at 31-7 overall and won their Class 4A DeKalb regional and Huntley sectional semifinal, 9-0 over Grant before falling to Barrington, 9-7, in the sectional final. The season highlights also included head coach Mark Petryniec’s 400th career win at Huntley.
The Red Raiders’ final rankings were eighth in Class 4A; seventh in Chicago and 12th in Illinois, according to MaxPreps.
