Champs need extra holes at men’s amateur

Patrick Reed of Huntley tees off at the 10th hole at Pinecrest Country Club. He finished in third place of the “B: flight at the McHenry County Men’s Amateur Golf Tournament.
HUNTLEY – There was plenty of drama at Pinecrest Golf Course as a field of 60 plus golfers wrapped up the two-day McHenry County Men’s Amateur Golf Tournament. Three of the four divisions needed to be decided by playoff holes July 23.
The championship flight followed suit of the “A” and “B” flights as it was decided by a playoff hole. Truman Keppy of Lakemoor, a McHenry High School graduate, edged Blake Connelly as he shot par at the first playoff after each totaled 143 shots,
Keppy is a junior at Stetson University in Florida, a division I school and started golf as a teenager.
“I started playing golf when I was 14-years-old,” Keppy said.
“I wasn’t nervous,” Keppy said. “I just wanted to go for par on the playoff hole and if we go to another, then we go another. “I think picking up the short game and putting has been the hardest.”
Andrew Mendoza beat Rick Stewart, 148-151, for third place, Mike Waffelet of Gurnee outlasted Evan Bridges and it took two extra holes to decide the “A” flight winner. The champ finished in par then birdie scoring fashion to win after a 157 total.
Waffelet explained he learned his golf at tough Bittersweet Golf Course in Gurnee, and golfed for Carmel High School in Mundelein. He was a member of a fourth-place team state finish as a highlight. The champ finished the extra holes in par-birdie fashion to win after both shot a 157 score
Jim Galwitzer downed Grant Klepitch and Casey Hunter, 161-163, for third place in the “A” flight.
Dylan Turner, a Cary-Grove alum, edged Dan Mussman by one shot to claim the “B” flight title after each shot 174, Patrick Reed of Huntley won third place over Russ Ruszkowski, 176-177. Stephen Napela, who finished tied for second last year, edged Patrick Craig,184-186 to win the “C” flight crown. Oswaldo Ramirez won third place over Russ Ruszkowski.
First place and runner-ups received plaques and the third and fourth place finishers won gift certificates. About 60 golfers took on Pinecrest in the 36-hole format.
Upcoming is the McHenry County Senior Amateur Golf Tournament in Sept. 30 and Oct. 1 at Woodstock Country Club.
