
Huntley runners earn top five finishes
HUNTLEY – A quartet of Huntley runners secured top five finishes as the boys and girls’ cross-country meet seasons began at the McHenry County Meet, at Woodstock’s Emircson Park Aug. 27.
Returning state qualifier Tommy Nitz finished second in the boys’ varsity race as he completed the 3.11 miles course in 16:23.33. Fellow Red Raider Ty Rasmussen was fifth in 16:57.92. Karson Hollander of Crystal Lake Central set the pace with a winning time of 16:30.75.
The Burak sisters, both seniors, coming off a state qualifying season, Breanna and Brittney, ended third and fifth, respectively. Breanna Burak clocked a 19:10.65 in a close battle with winner Rachel Soukup of Prairie Ridge’s 18:36.41 and Danielle Jensen of McHenry was next at 19:01.63. Brittney Burak ended fifth, 19:27,24.
“I felt I could have done better,” Breanna Burak said. “There is some subtle changes in the terrain.”
“It was good that we did well as a team,” Brittney Burak said.
Brittney Burak was 111th at state and Brenna was 122nd at the IHSA Girls State Meet while Nitz was 111th. HHS coach Matt Kaplan commented this pre-season about the Buraks.
“Both have earned great accomplishments thus far including all-area, all-conference, and all-region honors. Both girls work extremely hard. I’ve always been impressed with their dedication and focus on trying to get better every day and I look forward to watching them compete in their senior season.”
Kaplan was pleased with the results for the opening meet in both varsity and JV levels.
“I was really happy how everyone competed,” he said. “It was a good first meet.”
The meet was scored for individuals only, no team awards were presented. Individual medals were won by top 30 finishers.
For the girls’ varsity, medaling were: 11. Molly Allen, 20:02.04; 15. Guillermina Gimenez-Canet, 21:023.09; 23. Ava Borardi, 22:03.80; and 30. Abbie Williams, 23:39.77.
For the boys’ varsity, medals were won by: 13.Zachary Zuzzio, 17:32.03; 17. Luke Grubbs, 17:44.02; 18. Jaden Gutierrez, 17:53.66.
For boys’ JV, Andrew Raistrick won the meet for HHS with a time of 18:18.31.
