HHS spikers jump to strong start
HUNTLEY – Huntley’s volleyball teamĀ Huntley’s volleyball team takes pride in turning back the best efforts of Fox Valley Conference opponents. After all the Red Raiders were sectional champions in 2021.
HHS added another chapter to that end with a 25-23, 25-18 victory over Prairie Ridge Aug. 30 as part of a 4-0 start.
“The first set was so close, we flipped a switch,” Huntley senior setter Maggie Duyos said. “I’ve been setting for the front line for years. We’re very tight-knit group.”
Duyos, the team’s captain, is glad the team is off to a four-match win streak. “We wanted to come out with guns blazing this year.”
“Every game, the opponent is trying their hardest to beat us,” senior outside hitter Ally Panzloff said of FVC foes. “This will help us for the post-season.”
Senior Morgan Jones, a newcomer to HHS, registered eight kills and Panzloff added six.
Cheered on by a large gathering at PR, the Wolves led in the first set as late as 17-15. Jones, senior Avary DeBlieck and Panzloff’s kills as well as aces by Duyos and Luma Acevedo finished the set, 25-23 for the Red Raiders.
“We adjusted and did better on serve receive,” HHS head coach Karen Naymola said. “We put in Mari Rodriquez and Lizzy Williams helped from the back row.”
Statistics leaders for the Red Raiders were: Williams, five aces; Jones, eight kills; Duyos, 12 assists and Acevedo, 11 digs.
Williams, a junior, contributed four straight aces for a 22-14 lead in the second set and the Red Raiders held off the home team.
The Red Raiders will be counting on many players as they seek another strong season, following last year’s effort that reached the super-sectional.
“We’re lucky that we have such a deep, athletic bench that we can put in any position as needed,” Naymola said.
