Hit-and-run accident in unincorporated Dundee Township causes one fatality
DUNDEE TOWNSHIP — On Sept. 3, at approximately 4:35 p.m., officers from the West Dundee Police Department and deputies from the Kane County Sheriff’s Office both responded to the scene of an accident at the intersection of Sleepy Hollow Road and Boncosky Road.
According to police reports, the driver of a black Cadillac Escalade was initially found to be involved in a hit-and-run traffic crash at Route 31 and Boncosky Road in the village limits of Sleepy Hollow.
Officers state that the Cadillac turned right onto westbound Boncosky Road from southbound Route 31 where the driver failed to negotiate the turn properly, which ultimately caused the Escalade to side-swipe a black Toyota Camry that was stopped at a red light.
The Toyota Camry driver only sustained minor injuries as a result of the hit-and-run accident.
The driver of the Cadillac failed to stop after hitting the Toyota and proceeded to drive west on Boncosky Road at a high rate of speed, said the Kane County Sheriff’s Office.
The Cadillac also failed to stop at the T-intersection at Sleepy Hollow Road, where the driver eventually ended up striking a tree and large berm.
The sole occupant of the Cadillac, 58-year-old Martin Contreras of Elgin, was extracted from his vehicle and transported to Advocate Sherman Hospital in Elgin where he was pronounced deceased.
The incident remains under investigation by Kane County Sheriff detectives and by the West Dundee Police Department.
