
Pack running works well for HHS cross-country
HUNTLEY – Several red-clad boys cross-country runners closed in on the white finish line at Crystal Lake’s Lippold Park on a Tuesday afternoon.
Huntley’s boys cross-country team captured the first five spots, all within five seconds of each other Sept. 6. The Red Raiders won double dual hosted by Crystal Lake South. The HHS boys had 15 points, Crystal Lake South 62 and Hampshire 58. The HHS girls edged South, 29-34 and Hampshire ended with 69 points.
For the boys, HHS sophomore Tommy Nitz won with a time of 16:47.71. He was followed closely by: junior Luke Grubbs, 16:47.72; senior Ty Rasmussen, 16:47.73; junior Zach Zuzzio fourth, 16:47.75 and senior Hudson Fischer was fifth in 16:47.75. Junior Jaden Gutierrez finished just behind the first group in eighth place, 17:40.3.
“I was very pleased with how our boys and girls ran at the triangular meet,” HHS coach Matt Kaplan said. “We had a plan to pack it up and work together. I felt the kids executed the plan very well. It was a great day to run and many of our boys and girls ran personal bests for the season which was fun to see.”
Seniors Breanna Burak and Brittney Burak led the Huntley effort in the girls’ race in third and fourth-place finishes. Breanna Burak had a 19:09.0 clocking and Brittney finished in 19:09.0. Also for HHS, senior Molly Allen, sixth, 19:46.5; junior Ava Allison, ninth, 19:57.5.
Nitz leads HHS boys runners to runner-up
Huntley’s cross-country teams fared well both as individuals and as squads at the St. Charles East Invite Sept. 3 held in Geneva.
“We had great team performances across all levels,” Kaplan said. “I am very pleased with our boys and girls’ varsity both earning top three places. Tommy Nitz won the varsity boys race and Breanna Burak and Brittney Burak both earned top 10 places.”
Nitz won the boys race with a time of 15:11.1 for the 2.97 mile course.
Also for the Red Raiders: in 17th, Zuzzio clocked a 16:25.7; 18.Rasmussen, 16:26.2; 32. Grubbs, 17:26.3; 34. Gutierez, 17:32.5; 45. Fisher, 18:21.7; 55. junior Andrew McVeen, 18:57.5.
The Red Raiders concluded the day as runner-up in the boys’ meet with 96 points. Downers Grove North won with 20 points while HHS edged St. Charles East by four points.
Girls race
Huntley’s Breanna Burak came in third place with a time of 18:06.0 and senior Brittney Burak was sixth with an 18:40.7 clocking. Guillermino Gimenez Canet was 29th, 19:54.9; 35. junior Ava Allison, 20:09.0; 48. Allen, 21:18.0.
HHS finished third with 114 points, five points behind second place St. Charles East. Elmhurst York won the team title with 27 points.
