Red Raiders mow down 11th straight league foe
HUNTLEY – Huntley’s volleyball team added victories as well as players who will continue their careers in college.
HHS senior Ciera Fletcher committed to play volleyball at Edgewater College, a Division III college in Madison, Wisc. The school offered the two most important things to Fletcher.
“I’ve played volleyball since I was 12,” Fletcher said. “And they have a great nursing program.”
“Fletcher brings a lot of energy,” Huntley coach Karen Naymola said. “We have several good defensive specialists.”
The Red Raiders were closing out a 25-16, 25-18 win over Crystal Lake South Sept. 20 when Fletcher saw she may have a chance to contribute in the second set. She moved up to the end of the bench near the coaches and saw starting defensive specialist Luma Acevedo come out.
“I help the starters to make sure they’re not stressed going in, if they need a back rub,” Fletcher said of how she helps.
Fletcher joins several Red Raiders who announced their selections for college. HHS college-bound players in the Class of 2023 are: Avary DeBlieck (Miami, Florida); Ally Panzloff (Brown); Maggie Duyos (Austin Peay) Maddie Moran (Central College in Pella, Iowa) and Emily Willis, McHenry County College. Also, Class of 2024 member Morgan Jones will play volleyball at Indiana University.
The Tuesday win gave Huntley an 11-0 record in the Fox Valley Conference and unbeaten at 22-0 in sets. The victory came over last season’s FVC champs.
“I thought we served well and that has been one of our strengths,” Naymola said. “That really helps our front line players. “I thought South got some runs going, but we have a goal to not give up three points in a row. I feel we’re in a great spot after the first round. But teams have seen us once and will make adjustments because the FVC is such a good conference.”
Panzloff totaled seven kills, Jones pitched in six kills while Georgia Watson and DeBlieck had five each. Duyos had three aces and 18 assists and Acevedo contributed six digs. DeBlieck contributed two blocks.
Recent league wins also included Huntley’s 25-19, 25-16 triumph at Dundee-Crown Sept 15.
Jones led in kills against the Chargers with seven while Duyos chalked up 15 assists; Panzloff had three blocks and DeBlieck two and Georgia Watson had three aces.
Defensively, Duyos led with 12 digs and Acevedo had nine.
Junior transfer Jones is the team leader in kills and averages above a .400 kill percentage.
“She has had a calming presence. She has been a huge asset to the program,” Naymola said.
Hampshire
