
Go Fund Me started for a beloved Carpentersville man found deceased outside of a gas station
CARPENTERSVILLE — On Monday, Sept. 19 at approximately 5:41 p.m., emergency personnel was dispatched to a Shell gas station located at 97 S Kennedy Drive for a report of a suspected drug overdose.
Upon arrival, Carpentersville Police officers discovered 35-year-old Carpentersville local Jamal Johnson unresponsive outside of the gas station.
Officers quickly administered Narcan while they awaited the arrival of Carpentersville emergency responders, who then began performing CPR on Johnson before transporting him to an ambulance.
Johnson was taken to Advocate Sherman Hospital in Elgin, where he was pronounced dead at 6:31 p.m. of what police suspect was a drug overdose.
Officers are currently investigating the situation, however, there has been no indication that Johnson’s death was a result of foul play, according to authorities.
An official cause of death is still pending autopsy results.
Many residents of Carpentersville, including local police and fire department employees, were familiar with Johnson, who was known to be homeless as well as suffered from mental illness and substance abuse issues.
As news about Johnson’s death spread, various residents took to social media to share their condolences, with many fondly remembering his friendly and outgoing nature.
Several community members who have previously interacted with Johnson are planning to host a candlelight vigil in his honor on Sept. 23 at the Shell gas station where he was discovered.
In addition to the vigil, Johnson’s mother, Barbara, has set up a Go Fund Me account to assist with funeral arrangements.
As of Sept. 22, the Go Fund Me for Johnson has managed to raise $470 out of its goal of $10,000.
