Boys golf wins boys FVC golf tourney on tiebreak
HUNTLEY – Huntley’s boys golf team nosed out Cary-Grove for the Fox Valley Conference tournament tile Sept. 22 at windy and chilly day at Randall Oaks Golf Club in West Dundee.
HHS and Cary-Grove tied with tournament team scores of 322. Jacob Gordus’ 86 as the fifth score tiebreaker gave Huntley the championship. The co-leaders edged Prairie Ridge by three shots. The overall league crown winner was determined later in dual meets but HHS’s record gained third place.
“It was good to get a preview of the sectional meet here and send a message we are a contender for the regional championship,” HHS coach Collin Kalamatas said.
Nate Elm led the Red Raiders with a 79 (tied for fifth), followed by Brendan Busky (tied for 10th), Taig Bhathal and Nooa Hakala (tied for 10th) who each shot 81s.
“I have been working on the greens, with the drills the coach gives us,” Elm said. “I was very consistent today. The year has been up and down.”
Elm first was interested in golf at age three and learned early on from his dad, Mike. “I hope to golf in college,” he said.
“Elm works on the green games a ton. He’ll be a force,” Kalamatas said.
The Red Raiders fared well in warmer conditions five days earlier at Randall Oaks, finishing second at the Charger Invite Sept. 17.
The IHSA Class 4A regional will be at Huntley’s Pinecrest Golf Club on Sept. 28 followed by sectional tournament action Oct. 3 at Randall Oaks Golf Club.
