Strong start paces HHS to 8th soccer win
HUNTLEY – Huntley’s boys soccer team desired to get off to a good start in a non-conference match against Rockford Jefferson Sept. 24. The Red Raiders accomplished just that and prevailed 4-0 over Rockford Jefferson at Red Raider Stadium for their eighth victory.
HHS (8-4-1) was led by Isaac Jacobo as the senior scored a goal and had two assists.
The Red Raiders scored three goals in the first half goals. Junior Gavin Eagan tallied first as the junior took a pass from Jacobo 18 minutes in. Ian Thompson tallied at the 23-minute mark from Jacobo’s pass and Jacobo scored two minutes later from Jack Breunig’s assist. The second half goal was from senior Ansel Dias from sophomore Mason Leslie’s assist.
Huntley goalkeepers David Pawlak and Ethan Robertson both made two saves.
“We slowly worked things out on offense and maintained the ball,” Thompson said. “We had great passes.” Thompson’s goal was his first of the season.
The team, 3-0 in the Fox Valley Conference, hopes to play its best with many league matches coming up.
“We have high expectations to play well (in the FVC),” Thompson said.
“We’ve been working on finishing our early-game opportunities,” Huntley coach Matt Lewandowski said. “Eagan’s goal early was a positive step.”
The Red Raiders picked up two recent wins in FVC action.
They shutout McHenry 2-0 Sept. 15 on the strength of a goal by senior Ansel Dias and an own goal by McHenry. “It felt good,” Dias said of the goal.
HHS came back from a 1-0 deficit at halftime against Prairie Ridge Sept. 21.
Jacobo scored in the 44th minute followed by Hudson Nielsen’s game winner in the 69th minute. The goalie tandem of Pawlak and Robertson split each half of play. Pawlak made two saves while Robertson recorded three saves.
Geneva topped Huntley, 2-1, for a non-conference loss Sept. 22. Eagan gave the Red Raiders a 1-0 lead with a goal in the 17th minute. The two Vikings’ goals took place within six minutes of each other in the second half. Robertson and Pawlak played 40 minutes in goal each and both recorded four saves.
Huntley took its unbeaten league mark into action against Jacobs Sept. 27 here. “The FVC race is still tight and anyone can beat anyone else, plus it’s a rivalry game,” Lewandowski said.
For post-season in Class 3A, the IHSA assigned Huntley to the Hampshire sectional. The winner will advance to the Streamwood super-sectional match.
