Red Raiders setter Duyos gains 1,000 career assists
HUNTLEY – Huntley’s volleyball action included an assist milestone and continued set sweeps of Fox Valley Conference opposition.
HHS senior Maggie Duyos reached 1,000 assists in her career Sept. 27 at McHenry. It occurred on a pass to Ally Panzloff for a kill late in the second set of a 25-20, 25-11 win.
Duyos did not stop there, with a 14-assist night(nine service aces) in a 25-15, 25-8 win over Prairie Ridge Sept. 29. She and mom Julie were presented with a volleyball prior to the win over the Wolves.
“It is quite an accomplishment,” HHS coach Karen Naymola said. “Duyos started setting for varsity her sophomore year and one of those seasons was the COVID-19 shortened season. She was surprised about the recognition but we informed the program about it Wednesday at practice about her accomplishment so she would be aware of it. She is a great leader and athlete.”
The most recent achievement of 1,000 assists was Class of 2019 member Taylor Jakobowski, whose career total was 3,557 and included a sectional title in 2019. Jakobowski is a junior setter at Division I Seton Hall University in the Big East Conference.
“I can tell in the warm-ups who might have a good night,” Duyos said. “If they’re not blocking Avary DeBlieck, then I do my best to get it to her or if Panzloff looks like she might have a good night, I try and do my best to get it to her.”
Duyos has topped 20 or more assists in three recent matches. The most was 30 assists against Barrington (three sets, 2-1 win) followed by 24 against Crystal Lake Central and 20 against McHenry.
Duyos, who is an Austin Peay University recruit, has high standards for herself.
“I always try and do better today than yesterday,” Duyos said. “Even if I have a great match, I’ll work on something the next day. Going into the season, I wanted to work a lot on the serving consistency.”
Also of note, Panzloff, a senior, reached 390 kills on the season to lead the weapons at the net.
