Tennis squad wraps up FVC crown
Huntley’s girls tennis team clinched the Fox Valley Conference championship with three victories over FVC foes last week.
HHS’s clincher was a 5-2 win over Cary-Grove Sept. 28 following a 7-0 shutout of Dundee-Crown. Another shutout, 7-0 over Crystal Lake South, wrapped up home meets Sept. 29. HHS’s record stood at 8-0 in FVC, 17-1 overall.
Red Raiders head coach Barry Wells commented on the league crown and this weekend’s (Oct. 7-8) FVC Tournament at Crystal Lake Central and Cary-Grove.
“When we graduated six varsity starters last year I wasn’t sure what to expect this year,” Wells said. “Our returning players put in a lot of work in the off season and really improved their game. We were also fortunate to get some very talented incoming freshmen, especially Ella Doughty, who is playing No. 1 singles.”
“We will be favored to win the FVC tournament again but tournaments are unpredictable so you never know,” Wells commented. “We should be the No. 1 seed at first doubles (Elaina Hibbeler and Kate Burkey); No. 2 doubles (Emily Chong and Delaney Stock) and No. 3 doubles (Carlie Weishaar and Nora Stevenson).”
Cary-Grove
The battle at the Trojans’ court locked up the FVC title for the Red Raiders. Singles wins came from No. 1 Ella Doughty and No. 3 Julie Klockner in straight sets but Ari Patel lost at No. 2 singles.
Doubles wins were provided by No. 1 Hibbeler and Burkey; No. 2, Chong and Stock, and No. 3, Weishaar and Stevenson. C-G won No. 4 doubles over Ellie Pauwels and Ashley Phommasack, in three sets.
Senior night
It was senior night Sept. 27 at the HHS courts, after a 7-0 win over Crystal Lake South, Class of 2023 members were honored. They are Alexis Becerra, Megha Jacob, and starters Chong, Hibbeler and Stevenson.
“Hibbeler is a four-year varsity starter and has qualified for state two times in singles and hopefully this year in doubles,” Wells said. “Chong is a three-year starter and is our unofficial team captain who organizes team activities. This is Stevenson’s first year starting on varsity. Stevenson took a lot of lessons in the off season and really improved her game. She has done a great job at third doubles.”
At Glenbard East
The Red Raiders won two of three matches at the Glenbard East tournament Oct. 1 for a 17-2 record. HHS beat the home team amd West Chicago 5-0 but lost to Nazareth 3-2.
