Girls start, finish with FVC cross country crowns
HUNTLEY – Huntley’s girls cross country coach Matt Kaplan noted an important team milestone was accomplished with the Fox Valley Conference meet crown won Oct. 15.
“The girls won the FVC as freshmen and now as seniors,” Kaplan said as the race day concluded at Veterans Acres Park in Crystal Lake. Huntley totaled 76 points to edge Crystal Lake South’s 83. Crystal Lake Central was third, 98, McHenry had 99 and Cary-Grove rounded out the top five with a 101 score.
The Red Raiders’ trio of all-conference(top 21) honors winners, Breanna Burak, third, with a time of 18:42.22; Brittney Burak, seventh, 19:26.60; and Molly Allen, 14th, 20:07.70 won their achievements three years running. Freshman Aspen Maldonado was 23rd in 20:52.10. Guillermina Gimenez Cunat ended 29th, 21:17.44 and freshman Gabrielle Sweeney, 21:54.31.
“I’m very proud of how our three senior girls went out and led the team to the title,” Kaplan added. “Allen started a bit back bur moved up nicely throughout the race to finish in the top 10. Freshman Aspen Maldonado stepped up with a huge effort as she finished 23rd overall. The team was missing one of our varsity girls and Maldonado really rose to the challenge of being that person to step in the absence of a teammate.
Breanna Burak said she has been running in the same meets with record-setting champ Rachel Soukup (18:21.33)of Prairie Ridge for years.
It is on to the Class 3A Machesney Park Harlem regional meet on Oct. 22 with sectional bids at stake at Lake Park in Roselle Oct. 29.
