Nitz, Rasmussen pace boys cross country to 2nd
HUNTLEY – Huntley sophomore Tommy Nitz was happy for several reasons when the varsity boys’ varsity Fox Valley Conference race concluded Oct. 15 at Veterans Acres Park in Crystal Lake.
Nitz outran the field to win first place to set up momentum heading into the Class 2A Regional meet at Macheseney Park Harlem Oct. 22. Qualifiers move on to the Lake Park sectional in Roselle Oct. 29.
“We talked about Nitz winning the FVC race and he went out and did it today,” Red Raiders coach Matt Kaplan said. “I’m also proud we had three all-conference runners this year who weren’t all-conference last year.”
Nitz finished the race with a time of 16:21.07. Also earning all-FVC top 21 honors were Rasmussen was 10th, 16:58.45; Zach Zuzzio ended 11th, 17:11.28; Hudson Fisher was 19th, 17:39.10 and Luke Grubbs was 20th, 17:41.20. Jaden Gutierez completed the HHS lineup with a 37th place, 18:26.82.
“The plan was to let them do the work until I was ready to make my move, in the final 800 meters,” Nitz said. Nitz, a sophomore, was glad to see his teammates do well in addition to a fellow competitors, runner-up Karsen Hollander of Crystal Lake Central and third-place Will Gulan of Prairie Ridge and Crystal Lake Central. “I run with Will every Sunday at Main Beach in Crystal Lake,” Nitz said.
Nitz came into his second varsity cross country season well prepared. “This summer was the best training I ever had in my life, running around 35 to 40 miles per week,” he said.
Huntley hopes to be a factor in the Class 3A post-season regional.
“I think we have a chance to win the team title at regional,” Rasmussen said. Rasmussen reflected on the challenge on running this cold and windy Saturday morning.
“It was definitely more difficult when I was in the back,” he said. “Definitely the hills in the back and the second mile were the most difficult.” Rasmussen set a goal of reaching the top 10 at the FVC meet and he made it.
“Just putting in the work and training with my teammates every day at Deicke Park,” Rasmussen said.
