Campanellis help lead way; Coach aims for 400th win
HUNTLEY – Huntley senior Samantha Campanelli has been looking forward to her final season playing for the Red Raiders for some time but the addition of younger sister sophomore Anna Campanelli adds to the satisfaction feeling.
“I was super excited,” Samantha said of Anna’s varsity starter status. The two have been playing hoops in the driveway for years. “Our games are pretty competitive.”
“We want this to be a special season because it’s the last year for our seniors and they’ve been playing together since fifth grade,” Anna Campanelli said.
Samantha Campanelli, who has decided to play hoops at Lewis University next fall, was asked about her leadership style. “I try to keep everyone positive even when things aren’t going well,” she said.
The early season also included closing in on a milestone for head coach Steve Raethz. His career record, in his 24th year guiding HHS girls hoops, stood at 398 wins, after a 55-38 win over Palatine for the D-C title.
Raethz said he was pleased with the Red Raiders’ play at D-C.“I was very pleased with the way our team played in the championship game against Palatine,” Raethz said. “It was a physical game and I thought our team did a great job coming out of halftime and extending our lead.”
Senior Jessica Ozzauto, who is headed to play hoops at Leigh University next season, scored a career high 25 points against Palatine.
“I think we faced four quality opponents to begin the season,” Raethz said. “I thought the team has defended real well to begin the season. Additionally I feel like we’ve gotten some contributions from a lot of different players which is very encouraging to see.”
The Red Raiders face Prairie Ridge Nov. 29 and Jacobs Dec. 2, both away, to start defense of their Fox Valley Conference title.
“Definitely a goal of this team is to compete for another FVC title this season,” the coach said.
Early games wins at D-C were a 52-37 victory over Hononegah as junior guard Cassidy Serpe tallied 14 counters and sophomore guard Ava McFadden added two treys. HHS downed Rockford Boylan 50-38 in the opener.
“It started with some really good consecutive stops defensively. We were pleased with the fourth quarter finish,” Raethz said. “Anna Campanelli is so active on both ends, offensively and defensively. She has improved her game a lot since last year and she showed glimpses of her talent last year when we brought her up as a freshman.”
