Scots spikers thrilled with 9th at NJCAA
HUNTLEY — The McHenry County College volleyball squad secured the initial team to leave the NJCAA Women’s Volleyball National Championship thrilled as the Scots earned ninth place at Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Two Scots players were named NJCAA Division II All-American as Hannah Baudin was selected for the first team and Madisen Perry was named second team. Baudin earned first team All-NJCAA Division II Tournament honors.
The MCC squad, a collection of area players who led Fox Valley Conference high school teams, gained several memories:
The ninth-place showing was made possible by three straight wins, of 3-1 scores and was second best in school history at NJCAA volleyball. MCC had finished seventh-place in 2019. The final MCC record of 31-13 was second-best for head coach Kyle McCall’s tenure, to a 33-9 mark in 2015.
MCC was determined to reach the consolation finals and did so after a first round loss to eventual champ Richard Bland (Va.). The Scots downed Gulf Coast, Illinois Central and Muskegon.
“Our message to the team was that only five teams could end the season with a win and we should go after that feeling,” McCall said. “Richard Bland was a very good team and we knew that going in after we played them earlier in the season. Only one other team had played more NJCAA opponents than we did. I thought we played pretty well and we’re happy that our only lost to the champions. In general I thought our serving was really great. I thought we enjoyed the most of the experience.”
In addition to Baudin, Jaclyn Poirer also had a strong tournament. “Poirer had a great tournament and we were surprised she was not selected with Baudin as an all-tournament team selection,” McCall said.
Richard Bland downed MCC 25-20, 20-15, 27-29, 25-18. Madisen Perry led with 16 kills and Poirer added 11 kills and 12 digs.
A trio of MCC triumphs were followed all via 3-1 scores. They downed Gulf Coast, 20-25, 25-18, 25-18, 25-15; Illinois Central, 20-25, 29-27, 25-18, 25-13 and Muskegon, MI, 25-23, 20-25, 25-20, 25-14. The Scots concluded a 31-13 season Nov. 19.
The Scots faced Muskegon for the consolation crown. Poirer led the offense with 18 kills and contributed 10 digs; Lizzy Muschong totaled 12 kills; Dana Devera played libero and contributed 19 digs.
“Muskegon played much better than the last time we played them in September. “We had a ton of aces in this match and only a few errors,” McCall said.
The MCC defense ruled against Illinois Central as they totaled 87 digs. Poirer led with 28 digs. In the win over Gulf Coast, Perry led with the Scots with 20 kills and six digs; Poirer contributed 17 kills and 12 digs. Devera paced tallied with 19 assists.
MCC had qualified for NJCAA by winning the NJCAA Region IV championship. McCall was honored as Region Coach of the Year.
