McHenry County sheriff officially retires; new sheriff is sworn in
MCHENRY COUNTY — Having served in the position of McHenry County’s sheriff for eight years, Bill Prim officially retired from his role on Dec. 1.
“With his leadership skills, humble attitude, and witty sense of humor, Sheriff Prim led the Sheriff’s Office through highs and lows, including two line of duty deaths,” said the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office on their Facebook page. “He handled the many challenges in his position with grace and passion for the citizens of McHenry County and especially for those who wore a badge.”
Prim has had a law enforcement career spanning nearly 40 years, with 28 of those years being served at the Des Plaines Police Department.
According to the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, Prim spent the majority of his career serving on drug task forces, eventually moving through the ranks until he was promoted to commander.
He retired from that position before moving on to the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, making this Prim’s second and final retirement from law enforcement.
A ceremony was held for Prim on Dec. 1, which was attended by leaders from around the county, with many county law enforcement departments represented.
“Those who worked with Sheriff Prim over the years spoke volumes to his character and leadership,” stated the Sheriff’s Office. “The Sheriff’s Office wishes him well in his retirement and thanks him for his service to the county and the department.”
Following Prim’s retirement, McHenry County Undersheriff Robb Tadelman was formally sworn into the sheriff position by Judge Justin Hansen at the McHenry County Courthouse on Dec. 1.
Tadelman faced off against Antonio “Tony” Colatorti, another Republican candidate, for the role of McHenry County sheriff in the 2022 general primary elections.
The race between the two candidates garnered notoriety after two McHenry residents jointly filed a petition challenging Colatorti’s qualifications to run for sheriff.
After several meetings with the McHenry County Electoral Board, it was unanimously decided that Colatorti did have the necessary qualifications to run for sheriff and could therefore remain on the ballot.
As the polls for voting closed on June 28, it was evident based on the McHenry County 2022 general primary election website, that Tadelman had come out on top as the winner for taking over the role of McHenry County sheriff.
“I’m looking forward to continuing to serve and protect the residents and businesses [of] McHenry County in my new role as sheriff,” stated Tadelman on his candidacy Facebook page.
