Red Raiders’ hustle plays, free throws, lead to wins
HUNTLEY – Huntley’s hustle plays added to another standout long-range shooting night to allow the Red Raiders to remain perfect in the Fox Valley Conference with a win over Cary-Grove Dec. 6.
Free-throw shooting did the trick in a close battle at rival Hampshire, a 55-48 win Dec. 9. The Red Raiders improved to 7-2, 4-0 FVC.
The Red Raiders secured a 57-43 win over Cary-Grove. Ian Ravagnie led with 14 points and Ethan Blackmore also was in double digits with 13.
Blackmore, a 6-0 guard, gained a starting spot this winter after a reserve role last season.
“He is a ‘glue guy,'” HHS head coach Will Benson said of Blackmore. “He is one of our smartest players. He does a lot of good things. When we call timeouts, he talks and we listen to him.”
The offense clicked well and held off a Trojans’ third quarter rally which cut the home team’s lead in half.
Ahead by six points, the Red Raiders stopped a C-G possession then Noah Only converted a key “coast-to-coast” layup. A key tipped ball by Ty Goodrich also led to a hoop to extend the lead.
“We played pretty solid in the first half,” Benson noted. “They scored 19 points at halftime (a 32-19 HHS lead) and earned them all. In the third quarter, though, we lost our focus what got us the lead. In the fourth quarter we tightened up the defense and shared the ball well.”
HHS again had a solid three-point shooting game as five different players, Ravagnie, Noah Only (9 points); Lucas Crosby, Blackmore and Jared Barnedo connected from long range.
Win over Whip-Purs
The Red Raiders held off Hampshire, 55-48, away Friday. Crosby, a junior, set the pace with 18 points. Ravagnie had 13 and Goodrich’s 10 joined him in double figures.
“The boys did a great job of beating a good team on the road with a packed gym,” Benson said. “We attacked the rim well and did a nice job making our free throws.”
Benson summed up Huntley’s overall effort to date. “We’ve contributed to get better every week and hope that trend continues,” he said.
Huntley is at McHenry Dec. 14 before closing out pre-holiday games hosting Crystal Lake South Dec. 16. Then the Red Raiders will compete at the DeKalb Holiday Tournament, Dec. 27-30. DeKalb will feature the IHSA approved 30 second shot clock.
