HUNTLEY – Huntley’s boys basketball team came home from the DeKalb Holiday Classic with a third-place trophy and momentum. The Red Raiders secured a 12-3 record.
HHS downed Rockford Guilford, 50-46, for third place and a final 3-1 tournament record. Senior Noah Only was selected as all-tournament. Only led the effort in the Dec. 30 third-place game with 19 points and also had six rebounds and three assists.
“We played pretty solid,” Red Raiders coach Will Benson said of the tournament. “We had a chance to beat Geneva in the semifinals and they went on to win the tournament. Ian Ravagnie did not play the final three games so we had other guys step up and play well like Only, Ethan Blackmore and Omare Segarra.”
The Red Raiders game with Rockford Guilford came down to the final two minutes and a clutch basket and free-throw by Segarra helped HHS hold off Guilford. Geneva had topped Huntley, 47-42 in the semifinal after the Red Raiders beat Belvidere North and Lincoln Way West.
“We did a nice job against Guilford’s pressure defense in the fourth quarter,” Benson said. “We did not shoot the ball great but Only was 6 of 12 from three-point range while the rest of the team was 2 of 14. Blackmore’s poise was tremendous. Ty Goodrich scored 14 points and had eight rebounds against bigger, more athletic guys.”
Benson commented on Only’s season as he is averaging 9.9 points per game but as a 6-foot, 3-inch guard-forward, he also makes his presence felt defensively.
“Only can guard pretty much any one on any team we play against so his defensive versatility is really important for us,” Benson said. “He has improved his shooting a lot. He rebounds well. He is very important to our team obviously.”
Benson is pleased with the way the team played during the 2022 portion of the season, but HHS knows post-season is the time to peak.
“We’ve had a nice first half of the season so our goal every year is to try and get better every week so we are improving throughout the year and playing our best at the end of the year. That goal will never change,” Benson said.
HHS statistical leaders are: for points, Ravagnie, 13.3 points per game; Lucas Crosby 10.4 and Goodrich, 9.2. For rebounds, Ravagnie 6 per game,; Segarra 4.2; Blackmore 4.2 and Goodrich, 4.1. Assists, Blackmore 3 per game; Crosby, 2.4 and Segarra, 2.4. Steals, Crosby and Segarra, 1.2 per game.
Huntley hosts Marengo in non-conference play as the season resumes Jan. 6. FVC games restart at Burlington Central Jan. 11.
HHS came out with a determined effort to turn the tables on Crystal Lake South for the FVC win Dec. 16. South had downed HHS, by four points to win the Johnsburg Thanksgiving tournament title but the Red Raiders turned in a 64-48 victory for a 6-0 FVC mark. Goodrich led a balanced scoring night with 14 points. Crosby contributed 13 points.
