UPDATE: D158 states the soft lockdown at Martin Elementary School was due to a threat of potential violence with a weapon
LAKE IN THE HILLS — Residents and parents of students who attend Huntley Community School District 158’s Hannah Martin Elementary School (10920 Reed Road) were alerted by administrative staff about a Hold in Place and Teach lockdown being implemented on campus on Jan. 5.
The Lake in the Hills Police Department was on the scene to assist in the investigation and later determined that there was no safety threat present.
The district went further to explain that while they were able to determine that there was no active threat to students or staff in the building, law enforcement and K9 units were still called to conduct a thorough search of each classroom and school grounds.
The search was in response to a threat of potential violence with a weapon that was reported to the school by an anonymous source.
“No threat to safety was found over the course of our investigation. Please be aware that your student may have been temporarily displaced from their classroom during the course of this search, but remained safe and supervised by staff,” said D158 in a public statement. “Thank you for your continued patience during this time. We understand these situations can cause a degree of stress and uncertainty for our students and families and we appreciate your support as we work to maintain the safest possible learning environment for your child.”
The district ended its statement by encouraging students and families to reach out to an adult in any school building if they see anything that poses a potential safety concern so that staff can react swiftly to keep students and the community safe.
