Red Raiders bowlers advance to sectional
HUNTLEY — Huntley’s boys bowling squad is headed to the IHSA Rockford sectional after securing the third of four qualifying spots at the Maple Park Kaneland regional held Jan. 14 at Mardi Gras Lanes in DeKalb. The sectional is Jan. 21 in Rockford and HHS will seek its second straight state team qualifying spot.
Senior HHS bowlers Caleb Vergona and Joshua Waters and Austin Tenglin all finished in the top 10 as Vergona achieved runners-up honors and Waters concluded in sixth and Tenglin tied for 10th place. Vergona rolled a 1,316 pin total, while individual champion was Vojtech Cisar of DeKalb’s 1,352 score. Waters finished with a 1,261 total and Tenglin had a 1,235 score. Matthew Fishman rounded out the HHS scores with a 1,048 tally.
Huntley coach Jacob Wagner commented on the HHS’s top 10 finishers.
“After the first half Vergona led all scorers with a 690,” Wagner said. “He had a rough game coming out of the break (a 174)but did not give up on himself and came away with second. Waters threw the ball well all day. A few missed scores wavered his confidence. He came roaring up the rankings in the second half. Tenglin was steady all day long, grinding out the spares and going on runs and grinding out the spares and going on runs with Waters and Vergona. All of those boys should be proud of themselves. They were a big part of the state team last year and proved they belonged at the top of the regional. They set the tone and the other guys followed.”
HHS was a determined team from the start for the Saturday morning round.
“We were the first team to arrive at Mardis Gras Lanes and the focus from when we walked in the door was to get through and to go to sectional,” Huntley coach Jacob Wagner said. “The boys were talking
with each other and the coaches on the way the lanes were breaking down. Throughout the day some struggled but we worked together to get through it and came out accomplishing what we needed to do. It is truly great watching them all work as one and string together frame after frame.”
Sycamore won the team championship with a team score of 6,030; Woodstock ended second at 5,988 Huntley was third, 5,968 and and South Elgin earned the fourth and final sectional team bid with a final score of 5,894.
Rockford sectional preview
The Red Raiders will compete at the IHSA Rockford Sectional Jan. 21 at Cherry Bowl Lanes. Qualifiers advance to the state meet at O’Fallon Jan. 27 and 28.
“Going into the Rockford sectional, it is a whole new ball game,” Wagner said. “In my opinion it is the toughest sectional in the state and I think the other 15 coaches l would agree. Our Huntley boys are ready for the test that is coming. The atmosphere at this sectional is the same as at our state tournament. The boys are rallying behind our two seniors (Waters and Vergona) and really want to get them back to state, I think every season every team’s goal is to get better and be there when the top six (state qualifiers) at sectional.”
