Seniors net career highs; HHS girls win 3 games
HUNTLEY — The Huntley girls basketball squad enjoyed a successful three victory week as it closed in on a 20-win season. Seniors Sammi Campanelli and Jessica Ozzauto set career scoring records against Lincoln Way East and HHS added to its Fox Valley Conference victory total.
Ozzauto scored 27 points and Sammi Campanelli contributed 25 as Huntley downed Lincoln Way East, 67-54, Jan. 14 at the DeKalb MLK Shootout. Both seniors will be playing basketball in college next season as Ozzauto is committed to Leigh University and Sammi Campanelli opted for Lewis University.
Carmel defeated HHS, 47-40, in the second game and the team was 17-4, 10-0 FVC. Ozzauto led with 14 points.
“We played two quality opponents at the DeKalb MLK Shootout,” Huntley coach Steve Raethz said. “Both Sammi Campanelli and Ozzauto made five three-pointers. Mallory Winters scored eight points and had two three-pointers. It was a tremendous effort by our team against a very talented Lincoln Way East team. I was very proud of our effort at both ends of the floor.”
Ozzauto scored 14 points, Winters contributed 13 and Campanelli had 12 in the loss to Carmel. The Corsairs won the Class 3A state title last season and came into the game ranked in the state.
“Despite the loss, I thought our team played extremely hard,” Raethz said. “We will continue to learn and grow from the experience as we move forward with remaining FVC games. I like how our team is coming together and hitting its stride. It was a good week with wins over Burlington Central, Dundee-Crown and Lincoln Way East.”
In the FVC games, HHS trounced Burlington Central, 61-32, Jan. 10. Ozzauto netted 20 points on the strength of three three-pointers while Sammi Campanelli added 15.
HHS downed Dundee-Crown, 55-26 Jan. 13. Sammi Campanelli led with 23 points and Ozzauto contributed 19.
