Double champ Johnson begins senior track season
HUNTLEY — Alexanderia “Alex” Johnson began working on defending her two IHSA Girls State Track and Field Meet championships in the Long Jump and Triple Jump at the first day of indoor track practice held Jan. 17.
Alex Johnson will not have one big decision to make this indoor season and when outdoors begins as she has made her D-1 college selection as Arizona State University. She recently held a national letter of intent signing ceremony at HHS. The championships in 2022 state meet were in addition to the Long Jump title in 2021.
“It is a weight off my shoulders,” Alex Johnson said. “It was a lot more involved than I thought. I was looking for a D-1 school and wanted to go to a school with warmer weather. I picked the ASU hat at the ceremony from Tennessee and Baylor. It was great, my teammates were surprised.”
Alex worked with ASU assistant jumps coach Phillip Butler Jr. during the process and met head coach Dion Miller. Alex Johnson plans on pursuing a criminal justice or law major at Tempe, Arizona.
“Butler is in his first year and is bringing in a lot of jumpers,” she said. “The Pacific 10 Conference is pretty good in track-and-field.”
Huntley head girls track-and-field coach Jason Monson congratulated Alex Johnson on her college choice of the Sun Devils.
“Alex was heavily recruited by many other schools,” Monson said. “When I spoke with coaches who called about Alex, I made sure to stress her attributes beyond just her athletic performance. Alex is a true leader and one of the most positive and team oriented athletes we have in our program. I wanted colleges to know they were getting far more than a great jumper and sprinter.”
He added, “we are incredibly excited about Alex’s decision to compete at ASU. All you can ask ever ask for an athlete is a program they feel they can thrive in and a culture that makes them want to show up every day. It’s awesome Alex found that at ASU. ASU is getting a phenomenal athlete, leader and person.”
Alex Johnson got her start in track-and-field working with her dad, assistant jumps coach Alvin, at Marlowe Middle School workouts.
At the 2022 state track-and-field meet at Eastern Illinois, University Alex Johnson won with a 6.00m effort in the Long Jump to beat Denise Hernandez of Naperville North. She bested frosh sister Dominique in the Triple Jump, 12.33m to 12.17m.
“I didn’t have much competition in the Long Jump. My sister Dominique beat me at the (indoor) Top Times meet,” Alex Johnson said.
The Red Raiders also have two distance runners who will move on to college for cross country teams, as Breanna Burak will attend Illinois State and Brittney Burak will attend Indiana State in 2023-24.
“One of my biggest goals is to have my teammates on the podium,” Alex Johnson said.
Should be a memorable girls track season, starting indoors and hopefully ending back in Charleston.
