
Senior wrestling group honored; regional nears for boys
HUNTLEY — Several Huntley High School Class of 2023 wrestlers took a collective bow as they concluded their dual match home career for the Red Raiders Jan. 12 against Burlington Central. A group of 11 boys and four girls grapplers and their parents were honored before the match.
“This is the last senior class to wrestle before COVID-19,” Huntley coach BJ Bertelsman told the crowd. “They have been through a lot but all stuck with it. It says a lot about them. The seniors have 250 varsity wins and 150 pins.”
The Red Raiders boys gained a 13-5 dual team record, 6-1 in the Fox Valley Conference, after cruising to a 65-7 win over the Rockets.
Huntley’s squad then competed at the Geneseo Invite Jan. 15. Huntley brought home a solid fifth place finish at the tournament which featured more than 20 teams. Senior Adam Pena provided the best placement with a third at 126.
Huntley will compete at the Class 3A individual regional at Belvidere North Feb. 4.
FVC update
Huntley beat Dundee-Crown, 58-18 in a FCC match Jan. 19. McHenry gained a share of the league title at 8-0 FVC that night. FVC battles conclude Jan. 26 with the Red Raiders at Crystal Lake Central. The Red Raiders were 7-1 FVC, 13-5 overall in duals.
BC match
HHS’s lineup included seniors who gained a varsity start after wrestling at junior varsity. Dylan Lewandowski was one of those seniors, although he had a forfeit win at 285 pounds, and the crowd cheered as the official raised an arm for the win.
“I was very excited when coach Bertelsman told me, because it is my first varsity match,” Lewandowski said. “The Woodstock North JV meet was my favorite. I just want to have fun. I love the sport.”
Seniors winning included: Hersh Suthar went out a winner in his home finale at 160 pounds, as he won by pin as did Raefel Sobprena at 138, Mauricio Quiroz at 170 and Pena. Aadi Patel provided a dramatic decision win as he pulled out a last-second victory in the final contested match at 182 pounds.
“The coaches were telling me how much time I had left,” Patel, who has been wrestling for seven years.
Seniors boys included Gabriel Aguilar, James Smith, Andrew Walls, Ben Wiley,(220 pounds) and CJ Filipek (out with an elbow injury). Senior girls, whose squad is 13-1 overall as of senior night, are Addison Drews; Hannah Price; Alexandra Strzelecki and Gretchen Sweeney.
HHS beat Jacobs
Huntley beat Jacobs in a hard-fought league win, 46-23, Jan. 11 here and also downed Crystal Lake South recently.
“That was a good win for us,” Bertelsman said of battling Jacobs.
HHS and Jacobs wrestling teams combined for a food drive to benefit Grafton Township.
Geneseo highlights
Pena, vying at 126, en route to third place, won all his victories by pin and contributed 28 team points and was 5-1 at Geneseo. Junior Markos Mihalouplos topped 30 wins as he placed fourth at 285. He won by three pins and gained a 32-9 season. Fifth place finishers were Vlad Maluhim at 132, 17-12 on the season and 4-2 tournament and Wyatt Theobald, at 195, 11-9 season, 3-1 tournament. Aiden Lira topped 20 wins at 21-9 for the season in taking sixth at 120 and was 3-3 at the meet. Zack Hornickel was also sixth, at 113, and secured a 20-19 season and was 3-3 for the day.
