Body found by Elgin Police Department officially identified
ELGIN — On Jan. 28, at approximately 2:18 a.m., officers from the Elgin Police Department responded to the 700 block of W. Highland Avenue for a report of a battery.
Upon arriving at the scene, officers located an adult male lying on the ground who was determined to be deceased. Detectives from the Major Investigations Division arrived at the location and notified the public that they were actively investigating the case.
Officers reassured community members that it was an isolated incident and there was no danger to residents.
Following the discovery of the body, authorities contacted the Kane County Coroner’s Office, where they later identified the deceased individual as 37-year-old Chavell Fisher of Elgin.
An autopsy was performed on Fisher on Jan. 30 after he was transported to the Kane County Morgue.
The preliminary cause of death was discovered to be a stab wound.
Toxicology samples were collected and sent to a forensic lab for further analysis, while the Kane County Coroner’s Office continues to work with the Elgin Police Department in the ongoing investigation of Fisher’s death.
Fisher’s family was devastated upon hearing the news, with his sister, Gena, immediately working to set up a GoFundMe to assist the family with expenses pertaining to his loss of life.
“He was murdered on his way to [the] store in Elgin, IL on Jan. 28. Vell just celebrated his 37th birthday on Jan. 4. I know people say this when they lose someone, but my brother was a kind person, and extra funny,” wrote Gena on Fisher’s GoFundMe. “He’s my momma’s youngest child and her best friend. He was one of the funniest people I know. Vell was somebody you couldn’t stay mad at for long. He was [too] funny. He always tried to stay in contact with [the] people he cared about. Vell is well-liked and loved by a lot of people.”
As of Jan. 31, Fisher’s GoFundMe has managed to raise over $200 of its initial goal of $6,000.
Gena added that while Fisher did have life insurance, due to him not having a beneficiary listed, it’ll take the family some time for them to collect the funds for funeral expenses, and are hopeful the GoFundMe can offset some of those costs in the meantime.
