
7 HHS grapplers up to regional challenge
HUNTLEY — The Red Raiders’ wrestling squad will be well represented at the IHSA Class 3A Barrington individual sectional as seven Red Raiders moved on from the Belvidere North Regional Feb. 4.
HHS ended with a third place team finish at 160 points at regional.
Earning top three finishes and advancing to sectional are: Aiden Lira, first at 120 pounds; Adam Pena, first at 126 pounds and Markos Mihalouplos was the champion at 285 pounds. Finishing second were Rafael Sobprena at 138; Wyatt Theobald at 195 while Shane McGuine, third at 145 and Zach Hornickel, third at 113.
HHS head coach BJ Bertelsman commented on the sectional qualifiers.
“We were behind the eight-ball going in missing a couple of starters. The guys wrestled tough, just not enough this year. Our goals for sectional are to stay healthy and practice hard.”
A look at how the Red Raiders advanced to Barrington:
Lira notched the 120 pound title and has a 24-21 season record. Lira beat Ben Arbontante of Jacobs in an 11-3 major decision.
At 126, Pena secured a 30-12 record on his season as he beat Ethan Hagerman of Machesney Park Harlem with a pin in 3:14. Pena won all three matches by pin.
Mihalopoulos will vie for his second straight IHSA State Tournament at sectional. He is 33-9 this season after a 7-0 win over Damarion Love of Rockford Auburn for the title.
Theobald at 195 advanced with a second place finish. He fell to Tyler Boyd of Hampshire by pin after two wins. McGuine, 145 pounds, notched a third place finish and 14-9 overall after a 3-1 tournament. He beat Chris Naprikowski of Hampshire with a pin for third. Sobrepna advanced to the finals at 138 pin as he pounds and is 27-18 this season. He won two matches before a loss to Dominic Giardin of Belvidere North by pin.
Hornickel took third at 113 pounds and improved to 23-23 overall as he beat Andrew Salmieri of Hampshire, in a second period pin for the second win over the Whip-Purs wrestler.
