Huntley youth may miss out on tradition
HUNTLEY — Huntley baseball organizations are lamenting the possible loss of a summer tradition.
Stopping at the Dairy Mart ice cream shop on Route 47 may be a thing of the past due to the legal situation of the current owners, Christopher Hopp, 38 and Corrine Breskovich, 42, both of Crystal Lake.
The leader of the Raider Baseball Academy, located across the street, has fond memories of the summer’s night spot.
“My family and I were shocked and saddened to hear the news about the new owners,” Garcia said. “This is going to impact our community and especially the baseball community in a significant way. It is a frequent stop for our organization that will be sorely missed in the summer. We have many memories personally with Dairy Mart being the first stop for both my boys after their very first baseball game and our tradition to stop on the way home and get ice cream on Sunday evenings after a weekend long tournament.”
“We used to call our baseball field, ‘Dairy Mart Park’,” RBA coach Trevor Mendick said.
When contacted, other youth sports organizations said they did not have any sponsorships lined up with the current owners. The Huntley High School football program did sell coupons there in the past.
A statement from the Village of Huntley read that officials are aware of the court proceedings against the new owners of the Dairy Mart and Huntley Police Department is working with the Crystal Lake Police Department.
Court update
Hopp and his wife, Breskovich, are charged with intent to deliver more than 200 grams of psylocybin mushroom. Also, unlawfully possessing a Remington 12-gauge shotgun, a Ruger Security-Six Revolver, a Taurus PT22 pistol, a Remington Long Range Rifle, ammunition and shotgun shells. Their next court date is Feb. 17 in McHenry County Court.
