Back-to-back scoring bests for Ozzauto; FVC title win for HHS
HUNTLEY — Sports career bests are made to be broken. But before the ink is dry?
That’s what Huntley senior Jessie Ozzauto accomplished in a 30-point effort as Huntley’s girls basketball team topped Dundee-Crown, 51-38, on Feb. 8. On Feb. 6, Ozzauto reached 1,000 career points with a 29-point game in a 68-39 win over Burlington Central. The win over the BC clinched a share of the Fox Valley Conference championship and then the victory over the Chargers clinched the trophy with a 17-0 record, 26-4 overall.
“Ozzauto had quite a week with scoring her 1,000th career point and scoring career highs in consecutive games,” Huntley coach Steve Raethz said. “She has really carried the load offensively in stretches in our game against Dundee-Crown. It is nice to have a player of her caliber who is capable of doing that on a given night.”
Case in point, D-C led by five points early in the third quarter but Ozzauto scored eight straight for a one-point lead. A three-pointer by Ozzauto sent the team to a 17-4 finish. Anna Campanelli made key free throws down the stretch and ended with 12 points.
Ozzauto leads the Red Raiders in scoring at 16.1 points per game, 6.6 rebounds, 3 assists and 2.6 steals. She has made 44 three-pointers.
“She has worked really hard to improve her game and skill set each year especially with extending her range as a shooter,” Raethz said. “She is a great teammate and leader and she is also very coachable.”
Ozzauto will play basketball at Leigh University of the D-1 Patriot League in Bethlehem, PA next fall. She has been playing on hoops teams since the second grade.
The team celebrated its seventh FVC crown overall, 27 straight league wins, back home at HHS with along with taking pictures with the newly earned trophy.
“It is a cool accomplishment,” Ozzauto said.
A perfect 18-0 FVC record is the only remaining goal is a win in the regular season finale at Crystal Lake Central Feb. 10.
