HHS boys ready for regional challenge
HUNTLEY — Huntley’s boys basketball team hopes to make some waves at the Class 4A Rockton Hononegah Regional. The top seeded Red Raiders battle Machesney Park Harlem at 6 p.m. Feb. 22 in the regional semifinal.
HHS head coach Will Benson gave a scouting report on the Huskies (13-18. Harlem downed Hononegah in the regional quarterfinal to advance.
“Harlem has nice depth and are very athletic and play hard,” Benson said. “They have 10 seniors and a lot of them play. Their zone is tough and they can score in a variety of ways with their pressure defense.”
The Red Raiders believe their 20-10 record this season was a solid one but all teams are 0-0 to start regional play.
“This year more than any other in my 13 years as a head coach, it seems nothing else matters other than who shows up on any give night and plays well,” Benson said. “I realize that is the case most of the time in general but if you look at the scores it seems it is very hard to predict. We have had a solid season considering all the kids we lost to graduation and all the questions we had to answer in terms of kids contributing who have not contributed in varsity games until this year. We have a great chance to hit the reset button and make some noise if we play well.”
The semifinal winners play at 7 p.m. Feb. 24 for the regional title. Rockford East plays McHenry in the second semifinal.
One player who has been among the Huntley standouts this year is senior Ian Ravagnie.
“Ravagnie has been one of our leaders since last summer,” Benson said. “He is an outstanding kid and has really rebounded this year. He has guarded well and better than he has in previous years.”
HHS ended the regular season at 12-6 FVC after a 60-47 loss to FVC champion Burlington Central Feb. 17.
Ravagnie led the way with 17 points, which followed a 20-point effort in the latest win, over Crystal Lake Central.
The Red Raiders also lost to Dundee-Crown, 53-45, Feb. 14. Junior Carter Schaap led the Red Raiders with 11 points. Omare Segarra added nine points.
“Schaap played well off the bench,” Benson said. “We actually did not play too badly but D-C just played better.”
