
Businesses, music salute Black History Month
HUNTLEY — Huntley Community District 158 concluded its honoring of Black History Month with a celebration coordinated RAD – Recognizing American Diversity.
The HHS Jazz Combo performed while several Black owned businesses shared their products and stories. Historically significant art of important Black difference RAD in America were shown Feb. 24 at HHS.
“We started working on it at RAD three months ago with our student group,” RAD teacher co-leader Shaina Pocztowski said. Pocztowski brought her two children, Emerson, and Cooper, who wore their RAD wear.
“Each month we feature a different group,” co-teacher leader Bryan Truax said.
The leaders said it means more with the RAD group of students, grades 9-12 involved. The month-long study included articles, podcasts, videos and more about the importance of Black History Month on the District 158 website.
Joseph Lewis brought his collection of international teas, available at the downtown Huntley shop, The Irie Cup, located at 1805 Main Street, Huntley.
“I have been open in downtown Huntley for a couple of months,” Lewis said. “It’s been a great response from the community. We have teas from the Caribbean and Japan.”
Victoria’s Sweets and Eats remained a popular dinner hour destination.
The next RAD event will highlight Women’s History Month, will take place March 11 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Marlowe Middle School. The celebration will include free admission for students and community members. Through this showcase, leadership in business, advocacy in wellness and supports in our community by women will be featured.
Come out and support local businesses owned by women and learn more about community programs for young girls. The event schedule will be posted on the school district web site, huntley158/rad/.
